Your Agent Knows Everything

Let's start with the uncomfortable truth: your OpenClaw agent has access to everything you give it. Files, emails, calendars, browsing history, API keys, database credentials — whatever tools and permissions you've configured.

That's the whole point. An autonomous agent needs access to be useful.

But here's what most people don't think about: where does all that data go?

The answer involves more parties than you'd expect.

The Data Flow: Who Sees What

Every time your agent processes a request, data flows through multiple systems:

1. Your Machine (Local)

Your OpenClaw gateway runs locally or on your server. It reads your workspace files, executes commands, and manages tool connections. This data stays local — unless you've misconfigured something.

Risk factors:

  • Gateway bound to 0.0.0.0? Your entire agent is accessible from the internet
  • No authentication? Anyone can read your agent's memory and files
  • Exposed ports? Attackers can connect and issue commands

    What they see:

  • Full conversation history per request

  • System prompts and instructions
  • Any data your agent processes in that turn
  • What they claim:

  • Anthropic: API data not used for training (but retained 30 days for safety)
  • OpenAI: API data not used for training by default (enterprise agreements vary)

  • The catch: Even if they don't train on your data, they *store it* temporarily. A data breach at your AI provider means your data is exposed.

    Every skill and integration adds another data recipient:

  • Email tools → your inbox contents flow through the gateway
  • Browser automation → page contents, cookies, sessions
  • GitHub/code tools → your source code, commit history

  • Full request/response pairs

    Network-Level Logging

    If you're running OpenClaw on a VPS or cloud instance:

  • Your hosting provider can see traffic metadata
  • DNS queries reveal which services you're using
  • Unencrypted traffic (no TLS) is readable by anyone on the network path

    1. Credential Exposure in Context Windows

    When your agent reads a .env file or config with API keys, those credentials become part of the conversation context. They're sent to your AI provider and potentially logged.

    Fix: Use environment variables that the gateway resolves locally, rather than putting credentials in files your agent reads directly.

    2. Memory Files as an Attack Surface

    Your agent's memory files (MEMORY.md, daily logs, workspace files) contain a detailed record of everything you've done. If an attacker gains gateway access, they get your complete history.

    3. Prompt Injection Data Exfiltration

    A malicious website, email, or document can contain hidden instructions that tell your agent to send data somewhere. For example:

    You install a "useful" skill from ClawHub. It works as advertised. But buried in its code is a data exfiltration payload that runs on a timer, slowly sending your workspace contents to an external server.

  • Use enterprise API agreements with explicit data handling terms
  • Run a local model (Llama, Mistral) — keeps data on your machine but sacrifices capability
  • Minimize context — configure your agent to only load what it needs
  • Avoid processing truly sensitive data — some things shouldn't go through AI at all
